Buying the 6th Gen vs 5th Gen Toyota 4Runner: Which One Is Right for You?

Buying the 6th Gen vs 5th Gen Toyota 4Runner: Which One Is Right for You?

If you're in the market for a rugged, reliable SUV, you're likely considering the Toyota 4Runner—a long-time favorite among off-road enthusiasts and daily drivers alike. With the recent release of the 6th Generation Toyota 4Runner, buyers now face a key decision: stick with the tried-and-true 5th Gen 4Runner or upgrade to the all-new 6th Gen model. In this guide, we’ll break down the differences, key features, and considerations to help you choose the right 4Runner for your needs.

Performance and Powertrain: Old-School vs. Modern Efficiency

The 5th Gen 4Runner, produced from 2010 to 2024, is known for its bulletproof 4.0L V6 engine paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. It delivers around 270 horsepower and a reputation for durability, especially in off-road conditions. The solid rear axle, body-on-frame design, and proven 4WD system make it a favorite among overlanders and off-roaders.

In contrast, the 6th Gen 4Runner, launched in 2025, features a more modern powertrain. The base engine is Toyota’s 2.4L turbocharged i-FORCE inline-4, delivering around 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. A hybrid i-FORCE MAX variant produces even more power while offering improved fuel economy. The 6th Gen uses a 10-speed automatic transmission, providing better shift quality and efficiency.

Interior and Tech: Analog Feel vs. Digital Upgrade

Inside, the 5th Gen 4Runner offers a straightforward, analog feel that many drivers love. While Toyota updated the infotainment system and added safety features over the years, its interior remained largely unchanged—durable, yes, but outdated compared to competitors.

The 6th Gen 4Runner comes with a completely redesigned cabin featuring a 14-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, digital gauge cluster, and Toyota’s latest safety tech suite. If you're looking for modern creature comforts and connectivity, the 6th Gen is the clear winner.

Price and Value: New Costs More, But Holds Value

A big factor in choosing between generations is price. A used 5th Gen 4Runner can cost significantly less, especially models from before 2020. They’re also easier to modify and widely supported by the aftermarket community. Meanwhile, the 6th Gen 4Runner commands a premium due to its new design and tech—but it also promises better fuel economy and future-proof features.

Final Verdict: Which 4Runner Should You Buy?

Choose the 5th Gen Toyota 4Runner if you value proven reliability, lower cost, and a simpler, mod-friendly platform. Go with the 6th Gen 4Runner if you want cutting-edge tech, improved performance, and better efficiency. Either way, you're getting one of the most respected SUVs in the game.

I’m relatively new to the off road scene but I’m psyched about getting out there. Taking baby steps and looking for valuable input from anybody willing to offer it. Just recently bought a 5th generation 4r 2wd. Bolt pattern black matte rims and AT17s. Beginning of build process but taking it as needs dictate. In 2019 I drove from Cali to GA in a 2017 Toyota Corolla and went by way of the Grand Canyon. Breathtaking views and casum depths that draw you. Better snap out of it, 😄 anyway I had know idea I would be going down the off road scene a few years later. This is bucket stuff gold and I’m going to relish every bit of it or a least as much as I can.
Thanks 4RUNNER lifestyle.

Correction: 6th Gen 2025 4 Runner comes with an 8 speed automatic, not a 10 speed

How can you even compare the two? The fifth gen is ten years old with a proven track record! Who the hell knows about a totally redesigned animal! Ask the same question in ten years.

I like 5th gen 4 runner because of the 4.0 liter V6 engine 3rd row seating , and last the 5th gen has more legs in second row than the 6th gen
